Hi, Im getting a used MBP Retina Mid 2012 from a friend.
But before I get it, I need to know the difference between it and the Early 2013 version.
Can someone shed some light ?

basicly, just 2 issues in retina 2012 vs 2013

1. ghost screen with LG in retina 2012 (i'm using retina 2012 with LG screen, but until today i dont have issues/problem with screen)

2. processor speed, retina 2012 start from 2,3Ghz QC and 2013 start from 2,4Ghz QC

overall same...

recently bought a retina mbp 15" from macmall

how can i tell if it's 2012 or 2013 ? ~_~

it's a 2.7 ghz / 16gb / 768 gb

See how much cache the processor has. 8MB-2012. 6MB-2013.

i am 2012 i guess :( ??

Yes, its 2012 mid
But dont worry, if your macbook work fine, its mean all is fine hehehe
Nothing perfect in this world, even if u buying new version (haswell), maybe someday we will found a bug/error, are u will buy more or stop thinking for this bug/error?

the important thing is your macbook work fine

And.. you're :( because ?

The 2.7 in 2012 has 8MB cache vs 6 in the 2013 2.7 iteration.

So, albeit in a trivial sense, you got a *better* model of the 2.7 !

I thought rev 2 came in with the 2013s. Was it listed as refurbished?

i dont think it was. it didn't say anyhting about it being refurbished when i got it from macmall.

lemme find the link

oooh in that case : )

lol

sorry i'm a noob. my first mac ever so i'm really new to all this stuff. still trying to figure out how this puppy works. so used to windows lol

If the cache has been lowered from 8 to 6MB, it just means the extra 2MB don't make a big difference...

So, this is interesting. This OOS listing (http://store.apple.com/us/product/F...-23ghz-quad-core-intel-i7-with-retina-display) has the 2.3 GHz processor, indicating 2012, but with 6MB shared L3 cache, indicating 2013. Is it just a crapshoot on which model you get?

Or is it just the 2.7 GHz that has a different cache size?

Only the 2.7 GHz has a different cache size.

For the 2012s:
  • 2.3 GHz - 6 MB
  • 2.6 GHz - 6 MB
  • 2.7 GHz - 8 MB

For the 2013s:
  • 2.4 GHz - 6 MB
  • 2.7 GHz - 6 MB
  • 2.8 GHz - 8 MB

This is patently false.

Let me say it differently: most users won't feel the benefit or performance of the extra 2MB cache. You could do the same analogy with CPU clock rate. Most people won't feel the difference between 2.4Ghz and 2.7Ghz. Only benchmarks could underline the differences, but hey in Mac world it is not about benchmark but user experience and productivity. Excessive benchmarks are for PC users... :D
