Difference between Sync Now and iTunes Sync

Got my first MBP a couple of days ago. Here is what I don't understand...in terms of syncing calendar/contacts between my iPhone and MBP, do Sync Now and iTunes Sync perform exactly the same function? If so, why the redundancy? Thank you!
