I just applied for a macmall credit line, only reason being the 12 months same as cash deal. I wanted to go through apple, but I need more than 90 days to cover the two grand I want to drop.

With that being said, my question is, macmall lists two dual 2.5 G5's. One has a 16x DL burner and the other one is only 8, but they have different amount of ram slots. Which one is better for video editing and that sort of thing. I've read the one that can go up to 8gb is the way to go, just want to make sure before I buy it. Also, I was just reading about the guy who can't decide between the 2.0 and the 2.3 I was thinking about staying down with the 2.0 and spending the extra money on ram, good idea or bad?

thanks for any help!

Well the 2.5Ghz G5 isn't offered anymore, thus it doesn't have 16x DL burner. The Rev Bs had a 8x burner though. So I'm not sure what the 2.5Ghz 16x DL burner is, unless it's custom built or something....

Your thread is titled to discuss two different 2.0 GHz G5's

The 2.0's WOULD have different motherboards.

The Rev B 2.0 GHZ dual still allows 8 GB's of RAM and has the 8X Superdrive.

The NEWER Rev C 2.0 GHz dual now uses the previous 1.8 GHz dual motherboard and thus has a limitation of only 4GB's of RAM , but does
include a 16x ? Superdrive.

I was also in a "what to buy" spot last week and I decided on the dual 2.3GHz model over the currrent dual 2GHz model. I think that the added firepower from faster CPUs and FSBs and the ability to expand to 8GB of RAM is worth the price difference.

Ah! Congrats! Welcome to the 2.3 club... too many people settling for the 2.0's.

Thanks, I agree that the 2.3GHz model is the better choice, still the 2.0GHz model is a good pick. But for the $500 extra I could not resist the dual 2.3! Now I just need to order a new video card (thinking ATI Radeon 9800 Pro w/ 256MB DDR or an ATI Radeon X800XT).

I think you'd be happy with either of those video cards-- both are great... the x800 is incredible. This 2.3 could heat a small house though. :)

The rev. B dual 2.0 on macmall is 1899 and the 2.3 model is 2494. I think I'll go for the 2.0 and then spend a few hundred on getting my ram to at least 1/4 max. If my credit limit is pretty high, I might break down for the 2.3, but the 2.0 should do me alright...
