17" C2D. I can take the same DVD (movie) and read it with Toast. One time when I put in the DVD it will initial spin real fast (you can feel it) and it will read the DVD in about 6 minutes. Take it out and re-insert it 2 seconds later and it will initial spin real slow. It then takes about 25 mins to read it. Put it back in a few secs later, it's back to fast. This can go on all night.

This is a Matshita UJ-85J on the 17" C2D. I have two identical machines side by side, they both do this.

Tried different DVD source disks (different movies), same thing. Mac the ripper, same thing. Different speeds. Sometimes it stays slow for 5-6 inserts, then jumps to fast on the 7th try.

Any ideas what going on with these drives? Can I force the read speed to maximum?
