I picked up a 15" M4 MacBook Air in Midnight for myself and my partner has a 15" M4 MacBook Air in Silver. I immediately noticed how much whiter my panel was compared to hers. I took some pics to show the major difference. Both MacBook Air's have True Tone and Nighshift off, and set to the exact same brightness.

The panel on the Silver one looks washed out whereas the panel on my Midnight looks super white/clear to me.

Has anyone noticed this on their device? Why such a MASSIVE difference? Has Apple's QC gone down hill or what's going on.

See pics.

Hello helloapple1,

The only real way of digging into why this happens is by seeing the model of the panel on each one. Do a Spotlight search for "ColorSync Utility," and open the app. Under the "Devices" tab, click on "Displays" in the sidebar, and under "Color LCD," click the open button for the factory profile. From there, scroll down to line 16, 'mmod' where it shows manufacturer and model of the LCD in the MacBook. That's the only way presently to distinguish what panel types are being used. Here's what it shows for my 16" MacBook Pro M1 by way of an example: (Yours will show a different display model # than my A051 panel).

Since Apple uses multiple panel suppliers, it's likely that your MacBooks are using 2 different panels. But we'll see. In the past this is what the differentiator has been. One is made by Samsung, the other by LG. Or perhaps an entirely different panel supplier like OBOE (if memory serves). I believe, from memory, the yellower screens were LG panels.

has anyone figured out what model corresponds with which manufacturer?

my 2023 M2 15 inch Air has A055 and looks more like the left. I'm guessing by being pink from that extreme angle, it's Samsung?

Hey, thanks for sharing this info with me. I just checked the display info for both panels and they seem to show the same Model #. I'll post the pics below:

Wow that's disappointing. 😕

If you think about it, the only thing left it could be is the type of backlighting used. I've been in offices were certain lights were different color temperatures — one more blue, the other warmer & more yellow.

Odd -- shouldn't the serial numbers be different on two different panels even if they're the exact same model? I would have thought so, but maybe not.

I'm not trying to be snarky, but could you have accidentally posted the same image twice, by any chance?

Serial# doesn’t mean anything here

Mine is the same
