I need a high quality firewire/USB to digital (fiber optic) audio converter for my mac. I need something that does not convert the signal to analog. This needs to be a software independent device. it is for a recording studio.

Any suggestions?

depending on price, you've got different options. see http://www.m-audio.com for some nice sounding interfaces (some usb, one firewire). http://www.emagic.de has a nice usb interface without preamps. http://www.tascam.com has a very nice mixing console/firewire interface with 8 preamps

hope it helps

edit: I understand that what you want is an audio interface for your mac with digital outs, right? Most of the options above allow you to set your mac to use the audio interface for all the applications that use core audio, but for some special apps you need to set it in it's preferences...
