Hi everyone, I tried this question already in the digital photography forum, but I think everyone there is concerned with pro-level cameras, so I didn't get any responses.

I'm in the market for an ultracompact digital camera. There's a sale going on for the next two days, so anything you say to help me make a decision by then would be really appreciated. Clearly I'm not a professional or serious photographer, just looking for a small camera and looking for great pictures.

Here are my 5 choices (feel free to add your own):

SD1000:

SD750:

Any help and I will love you.

Thanks,

I have a Canon elph sd550? (7.1 MPxl.) I love it but I would suggest any small camera have the Optical Image Stabilization feature. I've lost a few good shots that the OIS would have saved but it wasn't available when I bought mine. Any of the Canons with an "IS" after model number have that feature. I just bought my daughter a S5is and it's absolutely awesome. Very close to DSLR in operation and outcome. The Canon SD / S series are made in Japan, the A series are made in China and there is a difference in build quality.

I love Canons too, I have a Powershot G7 and really enjoy using it. But for an inexpensive compact camera, well, I really like the Sony Cybershots. I bought one a few years ago, before my Canon, and it took great pictures, even though it was cheap enough.

Have a look at the Circuit City Cybershot options and prices here.

Best of luck.

I've actually been looking at the SD850IS for the past couple weeks, and so far I've been nothing but impressed. I've had the chance to play with them a bit in the store and am only waiting at this point until my Christmas bonus kicks in to pull the trigger.

A friend of mine who's an avid photographer pointed me to the following review when I mentioned the 850 to him.

This guy is apparently pretty well known, and even at a professional level has nothing but praise for it.

I recently bought the 750IS and my girlfriend absolutely loves it. It's a huge improvement over my HP I replaced. I think its a great camera. Small, has a lot of features and takes excellent shots. I may look into a different one and let her keep this one, we will see. I actually came across a really good deal on mine from Office Depot. It was regularly 299, but they had $50 off all digital cameras, and an additional 20% off Canon's, so I got it for 199. Sweet deal, IMO. Good luck.
