I have a pair of Edirol MA-10D digital micromonitors. I know they're not the best, but they're great for my hobbyist needs. They have pretty good high and mid-range sound, but the low end is a bit fluffy.

Right now I have them connected to my MBP via digital optical, though they accept both optical and coax for digital inputs.

Is there some kind of digital optical subwoofer with digital passthrough (optical or coax) that will work good but isn't too expensive (oxymoron)? I guess they'd have to accept digital optical unless there's some way I don't know about to get my MBP's 3.5mm jack to do the non-optical kind of digital (oof, is there a word for that?).
