Digital Voice Recorder Recommendations Please

Can someone please recommend a good digital voice recorder? I am getting one for my sister to record her lectures.

Sound quality and ease of use are the 2 things I am concerned with.

Does anyone know anything about software included with some voice recorders that transcribes your recordings from sound files to text files? Is this a reliable technology? I guess it wouldn't transcribe lectures very well anyway.

Doesn't the iPhone3G come pre-loaded with a voice recorder on it? (I don't know and that is why I am asking, but I thought the advertisements before the iPhone3G came out said that it would have a voice recorder on it)

I only have a 1st Gen iPhone but I don't think so...maybe when firmware 2.1 comes out
