MacBook sales in the third quarter have increased by a fifth compared to the same period last year, and Taiwan-based diode makers are seeing "robust demand" for MacBook parts as the trend for remote working continues to grow, according to a new report by DigiTimes.

Recent sales of its MacBook devices, including MacBook Pro and MacBook Air lineups, have increased over 20% from a year earlier, with shipments of related products to Japan and Asia Pacific hitting record highs, said the sources, citing data from Apple.
The report largely mirrors Apple's earnings results for the third fiscal quarter of 2020, in which Mac sales saw a surge in growth as people transitioned from working in offices to working from home. Mac sales saw double digit growth during the quarter, bringing in $7 billion, up from $5.8 billion in the year-ago quarter. Apple released an updated MacBook Air in March and an updated 13-inch MacBook Pro in May.

The report also notes that the growth rate will allow Taiwan's diode makers to maintain their shipment momentum in the third quarter of 2020, which should see them through until production of Apple's next-generation iPhones gets into full swing.

Notably, the same sources noted that diode makers have yet to ramp up related shipments for the next-generation iPhone devices "which are expected to be released soon," and are still shipping diode products for older-generation iPhones.

That fits in with Apple's own admission in its July earnings call that the 2020 iPhone 12 models are going to be released later than usual. Apple CFO Luca Maestri said that the 2020 iPhones will be available a "few weeks later" then the 2019 iPhones, which became available in late September. That statement suggests that we can expect the iPhone 12 lineup to be released in October 2020, perhaps towards the middle of the month.

We're expecting four OLED iPhones in three display sizes which could come in at 5.4, 6.7, and 6.1 inches (x2). Rumors suggest the 6.7-inch iPhone and one 6.1-inch model will be higher-end devices with triple-lens cameras, while the 5.4 and 6.1-inch models will be lower-end iPhones with dual-lens cameras and a more affordable price tag.

I suspect sales could've been better, had macOS Catalina not been so buggy.

Uh yeah, I had to give up one of my MacBook pros at work so someone could telecommute and another one at home so my kid can attend classes by zoom. It's been a nice little excuse to upgrade but I'm waiting for the ARM MBP. I can see where others have used this opportunity to buy.

this sounds good
hope new imacs do the same
but with the currend covid situation - who knows

I had a MacBook Pro 2010. I’ve been wanting a new laptop since 2015 but I could not bring myself to buy a laptop with a keyboard that I absolutely hated every time I tried it. Almost switched to windows 2 years ago but I held out. I got a new battery and upgraded the RAM & hard drive on my 2010 in 2016 which served me well. Ordered a 2020 as soon as Apple announced the new keyboards. I’ve had it since May and I’m loving it. I fell into their trap of paying a lot of money to upgrade the internals since they are adamant about soldering everything together but my hope is that I can use this until at least 2030.

the USD 899 Macbook Air 2020 with 256gb storage and 10th gen cpu really is a great deal

exciting that they can even lower the price of the ARM macbooks to USD 799, their sales will really smash if they do.

They’re not bad at all actually. I can’t speak for the US, but in my country the MBA and the XPS 13” are both within £50 of each other. The XPS does come with quad core standard, but then it only ships with 128GB SSD and way slower RAM. Also, only 1080p as standard. It does have WiFi 6 though.

I think the biggest differences between the MBA and the XPS13 (we're talking the older but still selling 7390 I assume, not the new 9300 which is more expensive), is the XPS comes with a 10th gen i5 vs the MBA coming with a i3. You are STUCK with whatever choice you make here and to be honest, I do not want to be stuck with an i3. Also the SSD in the XPS can be changed to a bigger one, and that is not possible with the MBA where you are STUCK with the 256GB. 1080p on a 13" display is very sharp and I doubt most people will notice a difference. RAM speeds? DDR3 2133 is faster in some ways than DDR4 2666 (latency, for instance), so in the end most will not notice a difference.

It really comes down to which OS you prefer.

Once you go retina, you can’t go back. My Windows work machine is a 1080p 13” thinkpad and it feels like it might as well be an iMac G3 for the disdain I have for looking at the display.

Quad core would be nice as standard but I’d take the better display myself. The i3 should be sufficient for web browsing and typing documents, which is the baseline Air’s use case. It may be a little slow at times but it’s not something that hurts every second of every day like a low res display.

Agreed that components should be user replaceable.

Aha! I went Retina in 2012 with the first rMBP.

It’s nice but what I really wanted was a high DPI screen where I could still scale the OS UI at 100%

The 2880x1800 panel on that 15” rMPB was too tiny to use @1x but the XPS 13 that I moved on to has a FHD screen where that was possible, averaging around 165 PPI.

Maybe not for phones, but you most definitely can go back. Retina is still good for consumption though, not poo-pooing it.

I wouldnt read that much into this, everyone has seen device sales increase due to the change in working patterns and related needs.

Yup...our household is included. It’s taken 40 years for me to go from a home computer to a laptop, but I finally dipped my toe in the water and got a 2020 Mac Book Pro. I am adapting to it pretty good, and love it’s portability.

They are killing it. I haven't seen these many orders on all forums for the 2020 iMac since about 2015 with them. The 2017 and 2019 models were like meh...

I am really curious to see what will happen to overall sales in the next quarters.
Will sales drastically fall due to the impending financial collapse, or will they be similar to previous years because such people wouldn't buy Apple anyway?

20% As if that is a surprise??

Loooot of users where waiting for Apple to change the keyboard in order to buy one.
Apple should be ashamed to have waited 4 years in order to fix the major keyboard problem.

Now, many others are waiting for Apple to now remove the touchbar and actually come up with some "actual" innovation after many years with only internal upgrades.

Wait till Apple Silicon based MACs come out(end of 2020, 2021), and the marketshare and shipment % will go up significantly.

ok now: ARM, remove the touchbar, down the price and they will sell even more.
Apple needs to remove Touch Bar starting with 2020 ARM MacBook Air and 14" MacBook Pro. That can help reduce price and remove worry of future repair cost for Touch Bar if go bad. No Touch Bar, no repair.

TouchBar is a solution to a problem that don't exist -Steve Jobs
(well that's my quote or I read it around but I like to think that Steve thinks of that way, LOL).
