Hello Homekitters,

I want to install a ceiling light which should be controlled from a Hue Dim Switch. I cannot buy smart bulbs as they are a part of the design of the lamp. Therefore I want to buy a smart plug, like the Elgato Eve, tear it apart, and wire it directly to the wires leading to the bulbs.

If i do this, will i still be able to dim it?

Or do you guys have an even better idea that I haven't thought of :)

Note, i live in Denmark, and we use 220v

This is the lamp

Thank you very much :)

I am curious, does it have to be the Hue Dim Switch? Or can it be other smart switches?

After doing a quick search, I found this:
Belkin WeMo Dimmer

This replaces the switch controlling the light. This seems much easier, and safer, than taking apart a smart plug.

If i do this, will i still be able to dim it?
If the bulbs are dimmable, I don't see why not.

Hi,

Thank you for your reply. It doesn't have to be a Hue Dim switch, but I like the ability to move it around. Also, I haven't been able to find an in-wall switch that supports European 220v

In-wall switch that works at 220V? Try Koogeek switches. There is a dimmer version available. They don’t advertise it (probably certification issues) but they definitely work on 220V. My house is on 220V and I have three 2-gang switches installed around the house.

You could use the Sonoff dimmer with the custom firmware (tasmota) on it. I have Sonoff switches around the house and they work in conjunction with homebridge set up on a Raspberry Pi. In fact most non HomeKit devices can be made HomeKit compatible with HomeBridge.

The beauty of the Sonoff is that they are so cheap from China (I get my plugs from eBay), though they do take a few weeks to arrive.

Homebridge and the firmware flashing is really easy too :)
