I've heard that it's possible to directly link to firwire apple's together using a 6pin to 6pin firewire cable, but i do not know how. ??????

Its called target disk mode or firewire disk mode and just type that in to help to get detailed instructions.

But briefly On the machine that you want to mount, start up and press "T" after plugging them together.

I did it once, but the data transfer from one mac to antoher isn't that fast as over an ethernet connection, or at least seemed that way.

That all depends on what speed of Ethernet. It's way faster than 10/100-BaseT for sure.
