Dirt under buttons. How does alcohol help?

Hi, i had mushy, sticky, dirt volume button, which sometimes is pushed down and come up slowly. Normally it just clicks.

Rubbing cloath soaked with alcohol seemed to help this and button is like bew now.

How does alcohol work in this cases? It wasnt even possible it would come under button, it was just wet cloath on surface.
