I have a brand new mbp with Mavericks. I know for sure I did not do anything to update iMovie, mail, iTunes, iBooks and more (none of which I have even opened yet), but they got updated anyhow automatically. With the consequence of going 4 gigabytes over my cell phone modem plan! At $10/gig, this is annoying to say the least.
I was looking and looking to find out what was going on and found the default setting in the app store is to download automatically. Be forewarned!

I also wish the size of updates would be included in the app store. Not everybody has access to cable or dsl. We hear about the digital divide in this country and assume that people without Internet either choose not to or can't afford it. That's not the case. At least I now have 4g/LTE coverage if I put my Mifi high up in a window. But at great expense. That's 40-50 times faster than satellite modem.

To disable, go to system preferences, app store.
