I have the larger iPad Pro and like the smart keyboard. I also just bought the 9.7 inch iPad Pro and smart keyboard. The keyboard is considerably smaller and I keep hitting the caps lock key requiring all too frequent stop-and-corrects. Makes the keyboard much less useful for me. Perhaps I will adopt but I am starting to be sorry I paid the $120+ dollars for it.
The "disable Caps lock" option in Settings only affects the software on-screen keyboard. This really needs a fix otherwise I cannot recommend the 9.7 smart keyboard to anyone other than an expert typist with small fingers.
