in iOS 5 it isn't possible to disable iCloud as the primary smtp server in mail. for example, use iCloud as incoming but use smtp.gmail.com for all outgoing mail.

does iOS 6 give any indication that we can finally turn off the iCloud smtp?

I've been able to do it in 5. It's under Settings/Mail, Contacts, Calendars, then scroll down about half way to a group that says:

Always BCC Myself
Increase Quote Level
Signature
Default Account

Choose Default Account and switch it to your Gmail account (It's labelled Exchange on mine, so I could get Push).

I just checked by starting a new mail and the "From:" says my Gmail addy.

The only time it brings up the iCloud addy is when I am replying to an email sent to my Cloud account.
