Hey all, thanks in advance for any tip on how to do this. I've tried searching, and can't seem to find anything.

Trying to copy files from one external HD to another, in order to consolidate and free up one to run with Time Machine. My fiancé has an obnoxious number of pictures she'll probably never look at again. However, it's not my place to delete them, tempting as it seems right now.

The problem is the copy hangs at times because a "file is in use." I suspect it's Lion attempting to preview a bazillion files at once in order to generate the microscopic icon next to the file in list view. Is there any way to disable this feature?

I'm a Mac noob, so apologies for tying up bandwidth over what may be a simple fix, but I'm at my wits' end. Thanks again.

Correction, the actual error message looks like this:

"The operation can’t be completed because the item “100_4373.jpg” is in use."
