Disable iMessage for certain people?

I am running into an issue where someone I know and text a lot downgraded from iOS5 back to iOS4 but never turned off iMessage. so when my phone goes to send him a message it tries iMessage first. Is there a way to make this always go as a text without me completely turning off iMessage totally? I have to wait for the iMessage to fail each and every time I send him a message even though he no longer has iOS5 lol.
