Disable laptop screen when using external display?

How do you disable the laptop screen when connecting an external monitor to the laptop?

With Microsoft Windows, this is super easy but I have not been able to figure out how to do this on Mac.

Close the lid if you have an external keyboard and mouse. The Mac will enter "clam-shell" mode.
