Disable menu bar during second monitor full-screen

I use a 27" Apple Tb Display and a 2014 rMBP. I have the rMBP set as my second monitor and the ATD as primary. When I go full screen in programs like VLC or QuickTime or iTunes on my rMBP and then switch back to my main display for work, the menu bar still shows when (as an example) a movie is playing whether through these apps or Netflix via a browser.

Any help appreciated.
