Disable per-user screen sharing?

The per-user screen sharing doesn't play nice with most VNC clients out there, such as iSSH on an iPad. All this stuff just worked in Snow Leopard but is now pretty much broken. Is there a way to make Lion's VNC server behave more traditionally? Perhaps I need to resurrect an old 3rd party VNC server daemon and have it listen to a different port number?
