So I am helping a client who has a malfunctioning trackpad. It acts as if the left click is being depressed at all times. It's not a swollen battery, it appears physically fine. I have finagled the computer to allow me to enable the setting to disable trackpad when external mouse is connected, which does work, though after about 2 weeks, the same issue happened again, so now I'm trying to figure out if there is a way to either permanently disable it through software (like, device manager on a PC would allow) or through hardware (disconnecting ribbon cable). It appears that the latter is impossible because the keyboard (which contains the POWER BUTTON, ACK) appears to connect TO the touchpad, which then connects to the motherboard. So pulling the touchpad ribbon cable also disconnects the keyboard and the power button. Non starter. I don't see any software trick either. Replacing the touchpad doesn't seem too hard, though I am not 100% certain that it will fix the problem of course, so I'm hesitant to invest my client's time and money trying that without certainty.

Any advice? Thanks -

Have you tried running the Apple Diagnostics to verify there isn't a hardware problem you cant see (restart computer, hold D down until Apple Logo appears).

You can disable the trackpad when an external mouse/trackpad is connected in accessibility settings.
