A few days ago I probably applied a reversed polarity surge to the USB ports of my iMac while in Windows XP.

Following this, whenever I am in XP and insert anything except the Apple keyboard/mouse in any of the USB ports the computer freezes, becomes unresponsive and I have to do a hard reset by the power button. Since the keyboard will work in any of the 3 ports I concluded that they are not physically dead. The ports also work when I am in OS X - I can plug in my hard drives and they function, even though slower. But since I do most of my work in XP, I would like to actually use the ports in this OS.

Until posting here I tried every possible solution I could find on the web: I reset the PRAM and the SMC, uninstalled all USB drivers and installed them again, unplugged the power cord, used a powered USB hub, etc. Nothing worked. The only thing I wasn't able to do was to go into the BIOS and disable USB 2.0 - I have a suspicion that 2.0 is somehow what is making the computer freeze and hope that USB 1.1 would work (this would be enough for me).

Hence my question: is there any way to disable USB 2.0 in XP under BootCamp? Or can anyone think of another remedy?
