So I have a MacBook Pro (Ver. 4) that is now out of warranty. It's been acting up for a while now where it takes forever to boot up and then it keeps going to sleep and locking up. For a while I just kept assuming it was the hard drive going out. then last week I happened to stumble upon someone having the same problem and come to find out it was the firewire port not working.
I hadn't done major research because this was a spare laptop just kind of laying around at our company. Well now we need to use it for video editing and importing. During my research of the firewire import issue was when I discovered that the firewire port was my issue.
Anyway, I removed the firewire port kext file and since then the computer has run flawless. My problem is though I need firewire to get video from the camera to the computer. I figured I would just add an express card and it would be no problem, but I was wrong. I put in the express card and under info it showed as no driver being installed. The second I plug the express card into my macbook pro it shows that the driver is installed. On the other computer I did a fresh install and it showed the card installed, but the second I remove the firewire kext file from the computer to fix the long loading and freezing up issue and reboot the computer will once again say the driver isn't installed for the card.
Now the card also has a usb port on it and I can plug in a mouse and it works immediately. I just can't get it to recognize anything plugged into the firewire (400 by the way) port.
So simply with the kext file on the computer and in the extenstion folder the firewire ports on the express card work, with the kext file removed from the extension folder (which I have to do or the computer takes 10 minutes to load and then gets all twitchy and freezes up), the firewire ports on the express card won't work.
So can anyone help me out with some work around. Our company (a church) really doesn't have the cash to spend $700 getting a board replaced just to use the firewire port. That's why I bought the express card.
I'm hoping there's some way I can disable the firewire port to where the computer isn't searching for it, causing all those issues, while at the same time still be able to recognize the firewire ports on the express card.
Any help is GREATLY appreciated.
Jamie
