My iPhone 4s was disabled not long after I downloaded an upgrade - iOS9, asking for a passcode. Had this iPhone for a few years and do not remember a passcode. Is there a way/method to transfer all files- photos, etc. from this disabled iPhone to my iMac?

Yes, with third party software. iExplorer or iMazing. Both apps are not free, you'll need to buy a license to use them. There may be other software which is free, however, I have both of the apps I linked and they work great.
