disabling automatic update for ipod

I recently emptied my library in iTunes after transferring almost 15g of music to my ipod. Now Iwant to add more tunes to the library. If I plug the iPod back into the computer, I am afraid it will empty the ipod since the library is empty. Can I turn off automatic update before this happens? Can I turn it off without plugging the ipod into the computer? I am running a MAC G4 and a 20 G iPod. OS9.1 Your advice will be appreciated.
