My girlfriend dropped my mid 2009 mbp a few weeks ago resulting in my super drive making obnoxious grinding noises during start up and periodically while idle. The damn thing goes off at all hours of the night waking me up, and has earned me a few dirty looks from my professors when it disrupts their lecture.

Honestly I have no use for the drive, it stopped functioning a few years ago and I realized I never use the thing. Eventually I intend to swap it out for a SSD but that isn't exactly in my budget at the moment.

I'm trying to figure out a way to disable the stupid thing without opening up the macbook and unplugging it. Is there anyway I can disable it through os x?

Nope. It is attached during boot up, before OS X even kicks in. You need to open the MacBook up and disconnect it. Or, better yet, just remove it altogether. Ounces add up to pounds!
