Hi all,

How do you disable the backlit keyboard on the 2017 MacBook Pro? Is it even possible? Wanted to do this because I have heard that there are significant battery life improvements to be had here.

Have attached a screenshot of my System Preferences > Keyboard dialog box. Please direct me from here.

Thank you!

Just turn it all the way off with the button on the keyboard? It's the F5 key, if I remember correctly. Or the corresponding button on the touch bar.

While reading this post, tap the < icon on the touch bar ( right above and inbetween the 9 and 0 keys ). Now that the bar has expanded, tap the appropriate keyboard backlight icons ( right above the 5 and 6 keys ), until the backlight is completely off.

Where did you hear there were significant battery life improvements to be had? Obviously it will affect the battery, but you're talking such a minimal draw that it won't make a difference.

Question is why do you need more battery? Is your computer's battery lasting only a couple of hours under normal use, and is that why you want to try things like this?

Best thing to do here is set a stopwatch under normal situation with the backlight, and then again without. Compare the results and move on, otherwise you'll never know for sure and could remove one of the nicest features in Macs for no reason at all!

Looks like your settings are where you want them for what you're trying to do:

Adjust keyboard brightness in low light (OFF). This means that the keyboard backlight won't turn on unless you adjust it yourself.

Turn backlight off after 5 seconds of inactivity (ON). So the backlight should automatically turn itself off when you're not using it.
