I'm in the process of writing some installation instructions and I need to "disallow" an app that I've "allowed" via System Preferences, Security & Privacy, General, Allow apps downloaded from:. Any ideas on how I can go about reversing the "allow" decision? As an aside disabling Gatekeeper will not help in my situation.

Thanks in advance!

The only way I know how to disallow a previously allowed app is to uninstall it and remove the download permission in Safari > Preferences > Websites, or set that permission to Deny. I just tested this again to make sure it still works the way it used to. I allowed the download via Safari, but because it wasn't from an identified developer, I get the Systems Preferences > Security & Privacy prompt to Open Anyway. It's too bad there isn't an option there to Cancel or Deny.

Edited: just found a terminal command here:

My question is not about downloads via Safari, but rather about apps that are installed. Ex; When I install VMware Fusion there is an "allow" button that I click in System Preferences, Security & Privacy, General to allow the app to run with privileges. The "allow" button becomes active after the installation of VMware Fusion. See the flooring image.

Another way to ask my question would be, after I click the allow button how would I disallow the app?

The terminal command doesn't help since the list of items are tokens that I can not determine what app they would be associated with.

Thanks for trying but you're information and link don't help in my situation.

Sorry that suggestion wasn't helpful in your scenario. Just out of curiosity, you want to keep that app installed but disallow it from loading because you had inadvertently tapped the Allow button? If so, why wouldn't uninstalling it work?

Yes to your first question.

VMware Fusion does not have an uninstaller. Per VMware, to uninstall the app you simply move it to the trash.

I've resorted to using a virtual machine with MacOS so I can manipulate snapshots to do what I need. Kind of a pain, but there are about 5 years of internet responses that don't work or way off the mark.
