disappearing e mails from an On My Mac Mail folder?

I have an old eMac, running OSX 10.3.9.

I selected 1 e-mail from a On My Mac e-mail message folder, deleted it, and ALL the messages (above and below) disappeared. They were not moved to the trash. Gone. I can't retrieve them.

What's more, there is an indication (on the folder list) that there are 15 unread e mails in that folder. The folder is empty. I tried moving other messages to that folder, and they too, disappeared.

What to do?
