Why does the occasional picture I take not show up in "Photos," or anywhere else for that matter? Must be the "New and Improved" upgrade a few months ago. . . ?

Some apps (WhatsApp, for one) create their own album in Photos and save their photos there.

I've also created a Smart Album named Unsorted, set to show photos that aren't in an album. The condition is set to "Album" and "Is Not" and "Any". When I first created it, it revealed 30-or-so photos I'd forgotten over the years.

Failing that, you might have some weird sync issue.

I've not changed anything, I just want ALL photos I take to go into the "Photos" section -- which is how it used to work.

the photos you take are probably there - I suggest to scroll down to the bottom of the photos app and customize (e.g. remove the large preview on top, set the order, etc.).

After that go into the library view and use the …-symbol in the top to set the display order to date added to the photo library. That should bring up all photos taken with Apple‘s camera app in the order you expect.

For other apps - as @mblm85 already pointed out - there might be specific albums in which you might find a photo taken from within that app faster than in the library view.

Ultimately update to 18.7.x I would recommend. 🙃

How do I "Remove the large preview on top" and "set the order"?

So nobody knows why my photos are disappearing. It just did it again today.

well 2 comments - one at least making an incorrect assumption about the iOS version and user-facing functionality (me) - hardly equals to

otherwise: did that happen under the latest 18.7.x update? If not - why not update?

I do not know if I have "teh" correct answer
but
personal experience:
somehow I saved a new recently taken photo in an album instead of gallery last week.
drove me crazy!

another suggestion is to check hidden folder

other than that we can't see the phone to troubleshoot the problem.

I always have it set to update automatically.

What "hidden" folder? Why do they have a hidden folder? It just disappeared a photo again, even with the "New and improved" update.

Does anybody know where this "Hidden" folder is? The people at Apple must be high all day, every day. I've been monkeying with computers since 1992 and this is the dumbest thing I've seen yet. Even worse than Microsoft, and that's saying something.

you need to tap and hold on a picture and pick hidden to make a picture hidden, highly unlikely the topic creator did that and forgot he made some pictures hidden and forgot he did that
I do not recall doing that, what happens is I take a picture, go to the photo app and they're not there.

So how do I find them and bring them back?

Agreed. I’m just answering OP’s question that I quoted so we can rule that out (and to learn something new).

With limited information, it’s rather difficult to help to begin with. There’s quite a few possibilities and probably more that I’m not thinking of.
  • Were they accidentally hidden? Check hidden folder.
  • Were they accidentally deleted? Check recently deleted folder.
  • Are you using iCloud Photos and sharing your Apple Account with someone else? Are they deleting them?
  • I sense some difficulty navigating the Photos app. Are you positive you’re in the right area where the photo should be? Are you in the right album, or did you go to the library to see all your photos?
  • Did you unintentionally set some filters?
If you’re able to, post a screenshot of where you’re expecting to see the pictures you can’t find.

- For the third(?) time WHERE is this hidden folder?
- No, I did not delete them. I just take them and they don't show up.
- Where is the "Recently deleted folder"? That is apparently hidden also.
- Nothing is being shared, unless Apple did that automatically.
- I've had an iPhone since 2019, there never was and isn't now any "difficulty" navigating the Photos app. Take a picture, it was automatically there until I delete it.
- What is the difference between the Photos app and Library? Where is the library? This must be something new because, as already noted, since 2019 photos went to the photos app until I intentionally deleted them.
- No filters.
