Hello guys! Just wanted to make a little post about my thoughts from coming back to iOS with an iPhone 13 Mini from a Pixel 5.

I was using a Pixel 5 for about a year with its Android 14. The experience were really good overall. Good performance, good camera, good battery life.

I bought the pixel exactly as my 13 Mini, refurbished from Amazon.

Android 14 is a little old but it's really good optimized and it didn't feel like a heavy OS for the Pixel and here is why I feel disappointed from iOS 18.. it just feel terrible. I see lag in the keyboard, the performance in general of the phone just doesn't feel good. Unlucky me that the phone came with iOS 18 pre installed because if I could downgrade to iOS 17, I definitely would've do it. Battery life is just garbage (battery life is 91%), I can hardly get one day of battery when with the Pixel I could get nearly 2 complete days.

The system just don't feel polished. The apps open slower compared to the Pixel, the animations, I don't know.. just doesn't fell like the iOS I remember.

I think that apple is making the gap between iOS devices a lot more bigger for those without Apple Intelligence capable chip. And of course, those with an old device like a 13 Mini, the penalty for using a modern version is bigger than ever.

Can you guys feel the same? Are you using an old iPhone? I'm thinking of go back to my Pixel 5 and buy a 8a or a 9a in the future to get the updates.

I just feel disappointed in general. The iPhone 13 Mini is one of the most beautiful devices out there but the software is horrible. I don't know what to expect with iOS 26 and that glass interface. For me is just the definitive wall to separate those with an old devices, form those with a AI capable chip.

Sorry for this little rant. Maybe my days with iPhone just came to an end.

Battery life is just garbage (battery life is 91%)
Pixel 5 - 4080 mAh
iPhone 13 mini - 2406 mAh

Even with a battery health of 100%, iPhone 13 mini battery capacity is just 58.97% of full battery capacity of Pixel 5.

the software is horrible.
Well, some say that iOS 15 was the peak in terms of stability and performance. iOS 15 is designed with iPhone 13 in mind. Additional customization was introduced in iOS 16 and seems to have started the downfall of quality of iOS updates.

I don't use iOS 18.x or even the iOS 26 Developer Beta but I would say that iOS 17.7 is way better. Do you have it updated to iOS 18.5 which is the latest stable release as of posting? Try to wait for iOS 18.6 and see if your experience would improve, however, it seems that you lean more towards android than iOS.

I suppose the comparison would have been more fair if they were both either running 2023 or 2024 software. One release could make the difference, though I'm entirely not sure about what the Pixel supports. I'm still running iOS 17 on my 13 mini and experience no noticeable lag anywhere.

Yeah, Pixel battery is way bigger but the 13 Mini have a better chip than the 12 Mini for example so you can expect a better battery life. Even a decent one. The phone I had before the pixel was a SE 2020 with iOS 17 and yeah, you know how miserable the battery life was in that iPhone but man, and can get a full day from that. (I have a very light use).

Sadly the phone came with iOS 18 and much more sadly, Apple won't allow the user to downgrade for an early version. I would love to put iOS 15 or even the 16 in this thing but well, it is what it is.

That's why I said that the iOS 18 is just disappointed. Bad optimization, bad performance, bad battery life, and that for a not equal exchange in features.

Maybe you are right, my times with iOS are ending. Really loved the system and the phones but I don't know, I just don't feel the same for the iPhone 15/16 (well, the colors of the 16 look beautiful but that 60hz for a phone of that price..).

Yeah, I would love to have iOS 17 in the Mini. The last version supported for the Pixel is Android 14 so, no more updates.

Not ruling out someone will be satisfied with iOS 18 on 13 mini, but I choose to stay on 17 given the age and smaller battery size of my device. I have never really done this before and I used to upgrade phones a bit more frequently but I wanted to keep using this small gem of a phone for a bit longer.

12 Mini had a bad 5G modem. Turn off 5G and the battery life doubled. They also made the 13 Mini battery slightly bigger. The processor improvements had nothing to do with the battery gains.

If you want to maximize a 13 Mini battery, try Low Power mode. You can set an automation in Shortcuts to enable Low Power mode when less than 100% and have it be an always-on feature.

Not sure what your budget is for an Android phone, but I expect some deals blowing out Pixel 9 and 9 Pro before the 10s come out in August. And the Nothing Phone 3 has an announcement planned for next week, which might make for some good deals on the 3a series.
