Hey just wondering how to stop the disc image from appearing. Whenever I open up messenger or VLC the disc image icon shows up on the desktop. I have gone into the disc image and dragged the icon into the applications folder but the image still shows up when i open the application. Help!

It sounds like you haven't installed your application and you are running it from a disk image.

Your dock icon is probably targeted to the one in the disk image. Remove the icons for the applications from the Dock, and re-add them from the Applications folder.

yea thanks so much, just re added the icons to the dock and it works golden. thanks

For future reference:

When you download an application from the website it (normally) leaves a .dmg on your desktop. You double click that .dmg and it opens to reveal an application. You then drag that application to the applications folder, this copies this application from the .dmg to the applications folder. You're then free to drag the .dmg to the trash to eject it.

You should treat .dmgs like they are a CD in your CD drive.
