Okay, here's the deal...

I have a pretty old home-burned MP3 music disc, okay not THAT old, but old, with it's sort-of-thin-plastic-sheet-layer-covering-on-top(side that you write on with marker) coming off. I'm afraid to put it into my iMac to play, and I really want to listen to it again. Now, about 90% of the covering has come off, and I got up the guts to insert it into my iMac, but it won't play! In fact, it just ejects it right out. Help! Does it need the plastic-sheet-covering for it to play? But that doesn't make sense... ?? :( Please help!

Another thing I want to ask is, I've been burning a lot of discs (DVDs mostly) lately for basically family stuff since it is the holidays, and I've come up with a few bad burns, where the file cannot be read or is stuck etc. Some of them have little scratches, and some none, but both the same problem. But the original file itself is perfectly fine, no problems at all. What's the problem? Could it be the burning format I chose? I initially chose ISO 9660 because of my old Windows laptop (it has issues) that can't read anything else but that format anymore. But now that the laptop can't read discs completely at all, I decided to go with DVD-ROM (UDF) from now on, starting this week.

Also, I find that most of the files with problems are mostly in folders, but I don't do folders within folders; no, I only go up to - in that disc, there's a folder, and in the folder is the direct file already. But there have been discs with those types of folders that I've burnt that have no problems.

One of thing is, could it be the disc itself? I use the brand imation for my DVD discs, because it's the cheapest, which I know is not good, but it's the only way my dad will buy discs for me. Is it normal for the disc to have funny sounds, besides the crunching sounds which I read is due to the sucking of the disc by the drive, like 'ping's and such? It sort of reads, and then stops, and then reads, with the occasional ping (or ting), and then it reads okay continuously. All this only lasts about max 10 seconds, but it still freaks me out because I can't afford (literally ^^") to keep getting bad burns and spoilt discs.

Please help! I know it's a BIG mouth full to take in all at once, but I'd really appreciate any help. Thanks a lot!
Merry Christmas! :D

P.S Could it also be the burner program? I use Toast Titanium.
P.P.S Is it bad if the drive sometimes repeatedly sort of squeaks the disc? Sounds sort of like how DJs squeak discs that discos? Does it spoil the disc or scratch it? Is it bad for the drive? Or is it just reading intently?
