please take a look at these two screenshots and tell me why the first one shows less available space. Look at the upper left hand corner to see the selections. I don't understand what the two "untitled's" are.

I'm going to savagely oversimplify here but it should show the differences between the two from a user perspective.

Don't worry about the top Untitled listed or the free space on it. That's your entire hard-drive. You can't add anything to it.

The bottom/indented Untitled is the drive volume/partition where your operating system is installed. That's what decides how much space you have free on your laptop.
 
What is going on there is your drive was converted to a core storage volume during an OS update. So that core storage logical volume fills the entire drive, and that is what you are seeing when you select the top Untitled. Then when you select the bottom Untitled that is the core storage volume itself and it shows what is actually used.
