i just got a new MacBook and i wanted to know what the 2 discs in the box did.
i have no idea what they do...

They're OS X install disks – they can be used to format your MacBook's hard drive and reinstall the OS on there, if you're so inclined.

You might need them if, for example, you replace your computer's hard drive with a higher capacity one.

You're kidding, right?

It's entirely possible that this person has just purchases their first computer and really had no idea what they were. It's also possible that this person had purchased a PC that had the recovery in a separate partition on the HD with no disks included at all and so had no idea that a good computer will include them on disk. The person had no idea so it was a valid question.

All he had to do was look at the disks. They guy spent what, $1300-1400 on a computer and didn't bother to look at the two things that came in the box?
