I've owned a MBP 17" for over 3 years now but....I have never had an occasion to burn anything to a blank DVD until Lion came out. So i bought some blank DVD +Rs and tried to use disk utility to burn data (4x speed) to my blank dvd +R....but....it just hangs. For 20 minutes or longer disk utility says " Burning image "XXXX" and the candy cane is rotating and the message below the candy cane says 'closing session'.

But nothing seems to be happening to the blank DVD then it ejects and says it could not burn the dvd +r.

Suggestions?

I'd consider trying a few difference discs and possibly trying out a different brand of discs; this would rule if your issue is disc related or there is an issue with your optical drive.

Finally if your intention is simply created a bootable install disk for Lion, I would suggest you purchase a flash drive (4GB-8GB) and create a bootable Lion install USB drive.
