Disk Head Parking

Previously, when I turned the computer off I could hear a clunk from my external disk drive. I had assumed that this was the disk head being parked and perhaps locked in that position. Since upgrading the OS I no longer hear that noise. I can hear something very faint from the drive, but not the clunk.

Can I be sure that the disk head is being parked properly?
