Ok, so I've recently bought a new MBP that I've almost finished setting up to run the way I want it with the right software, fonts, preferences and so on. However, I'm considering to replace the HDD with a SSD once the Intel X25-M G2 becomes more widely available & drops a bit in price.

So too bypass doing all this installation & configuration mumbo jumbo once more I'm thinking I would want to create a disk image from my harddrive which I then simply restore to the SSD once I get it installed.

Seems to me that this shouldn't be too difficult, but I'm a bit unsure how to go about it. Is it possible to do using Disk Utility? Time Machine? What size would the disk image become? The SSD will of course be much smaller than the HDD that is now installed, so creating a 320GB large disk image won't do me any good. Do I need to install some 3rd party software? I've read about CCC & SuperDuper!, but using Disk Utility feels more elegant somehow.

Thankful for your help!
