I've just done a verify disk, and it needs repairing. It then asks you start up your computer with another disc - such as Mac Installation Disc - and then use Disk Utility to repair disk.

What I'm not sure about is, do I use the disc for Snow Leopard or Tiger. As the Mac came with Tiger.

Make sure you have an up to date back up first and then you can decide whether to do a clean install of the newest OS. A clean install might just help in the longer term but do the Repair Disc and Repair Permissions too. It might be an idea to get Cocktail as that can run a regular maintenance job on your HDD plus it'll look for unwanted files that night be there. How old is your Mac and is the HDD the original? Could be the drive is starting to die, but either way, make sure you have an up to date back up of the you files etc.
