Hi all,

since I'm new to the forum just some brief background and a great thx to all the people answering newbie questions like mine. I'm currently working on UltraSparcs (Sunblade 100, Ultra 2) and a PC, and I want to switch the PC to a Mac. Silence is very important to me and I'm freaking out on the idea to hide the (loud) Suns somewhere in the bath room and connect via ssh from a nice silent mac on my desk . I do all kind of computer stuff, the toughest tasks I want the Mac for is audio recording with an external motu mkII firewire interface.

What kind of Mac do I want?

It will be either a new 17" iMac 1.25 GHz or a new 1GHz 12" PB + additional display. CPU performance is not as much an issue for my purposes as I/O performance is. 40 GB might be small for audio, but I could store stuff on the Suns using NFS.

So here´s my questions:

1. I/O performance on the 160GB imac disk or on the 40GB 12" PB disk
Does anyone know which disks apple is using? I could not figure this out. Anyone knows some disk specs?

2. PB 12" lids closed
Can I run the PB 24/7 with lids closed w/o heat or screen affecting issues?

NOTE: This issue is already addressed in USN Squids "A possible switcher" thread, but there is not a definite answer yet.

3. PB bottom getting too hot
Does the new 12" PB have problems with "bottom getting too hot when used in bed" like some of the other PB's do? I mean, bottom (of the PB) when conventionally used :D

4. iMac and PB G5 releases and rumors
I'd get somewhat upset if I got an apple G4 now and apple released G5 PB´s or iMacs weeks after. Chances are, this will at least not happen this year? Otherwise I might want to wait, I'm not in a hurry.

5. Motu mkII firewire
Please ignore if you feel this is OT, but I'm very curious: Has anybody experience with a motu mkII firewire on either the PB12" or the iMac17"?

Any feedback greatly appreciated,

Chris
