This is pretty urgent... I want to format and reinstall 10.6. Why? Things were running a bit slow, so I figured I can start over (I don't mind it).
So I put in my SL DVD, go into Disc Utility, and try to erase my OS X HFS+ partition. It (Disk Utility) said that "Disk Utility has lost its connection with the Disk Management Tool and cannot continue. Please quit and relaunch Disk Utility.". This happens while it is attempting to unmount the partition.

This is driving me nuts. I remember seeing this after I got my new 500GB 7200rpm 2.5" HDD.
So any ideas? I tried formatting the HFS+ partition in Windows 7, but it kept asking me to click Yes to format the partition because it was in use. I'll try formatting it in Ubuntu in a bit.
Maybe there's a Terminal command I can run...
