Disk Utility is not functioning properly

Hi,
I noticed that the Disk Utility is not functioning properly. After starting up the tool all the options are greyed out. I’ve managed to run permissions repair with use of the terminal command:

diskutil repairPermissions /

but I would like to make Disk Utility fully functional as it used to be - any suggestions welcome.
