Disk Utility only shows Encrypted volumes as APFS?

Where is Mac OS Extended (Journaled, Encrypted) in Disk utility? It only gives me unencrypted HFS+ options.

So looks like you're forced to use APFS if you want encrypted Time Machine backups.

I haven't played around with it yet, but I think Time Machine will now only work on APFS volumes (encrypted or otherwise). Have a look at the ArsTechnica article review section here.
