Disk Utility “status 83: device error” when creating disk image

Trying to create a few disk images from an MBP to a 2 TB LaCie external HD. I’ve had success creating a couple smaller images (under 1 GB), but I’m getting a “status 83: device error” message when trying to make some much larger disk images, usually after the task is at about 75% in the progress bar. Anyone know if the “device error” is referring to my MBP or the external HD? Seems odd that‘s not specified. Google yields zero hits for Disk Utility status 83. Thanks.
