Just bought a Samsung T7 to use as a boot drive for my late 2012 iMac running Catalina. Before I install it I decided to run Disk Daisy to look for large files etc to try to clean up my internal HDD, disk daisy said there was an error and suggested I run Disk Utility. I started disk Utility 2 days ago and it’s still going! I obviously can’t use my Mac now in till it’s finished. I just want to know if this was normal? I’m hoping all errors etc will be fixed before I clone the HHD to the T7

I don't own any Samsung drives (this post is based on what I've read from others).

Do not Samsung drives like the t5 and t7 come with some factory-installed proprietary software?

If so, is there any way to remove it?

My first step with one of these drives would be to mount it on the desktop, then use Disk Utility to COMPLETELY ERASE it, to the format of my choice.

Then, I'd consider it "ready for use" with the Mac...

You might want to boot off recovery or a usb image so you can run DU on your HDD from there. Repairing the drive you are booted off is difficult.

This is sound advice, but not really as important in this case since OP will use dd to overwrite the disk anyway.

Should I quit Disk Utility and stop it trying to repair my internal HDD? Maybe I should just Format my T7 then use CC to clone the internal so I can start using it as my main drive.

But my answer is:
Quit disk utility.
FORCE QUIT it if you have to.

Then, re-open disk utility.
Select the t7, then click the ERASE button.
Erase to either HFS+ or APFS.

That should do it.

On the chance that you continue to have the problem with Disk Utility...

I've had problems with Disk Utility hanging for a long time when external disks are attached. I've chalked it up to USB issues. Make sure you don't have the new drive attached when starting that program.
