I tried to format a memory stick in disk utility but its greyed out . Does anyone know why? I have tried with internet recovery yet its still the same. Any ideas would be great. Thanks

Does it have a hardware protection tab? Did you encrypt a partition? If you did, you must unlock.
Otherwise, it might have CoreStorage partitions on it, which often can be difficult to reparation
I usually go to Lion or Windows for a wipe. Have not looked at any open source utilities.
Coriolis iPartition can clean stuff up...
I've been successful with reformatting a USB stick using the SDformatter from the SD Association. Both Mac Disk Utility and Windows 8.1's Disk Manager were unable to reformat the stick. The SDformatter was created to reformat SD, SD/HC, and SD/XC cards, but it found the stick and reformatted it so that is was usable on both OSX and Win.
