Well, this is another reason why streaming media is terrible. Apparently, Disney axed the RedeemDigitalMovie.com service in Canada. The service it uses in Canada for digital codes included with physical media. Sucks because that’s the only way I ever purchase movies outside of subscription services. I only buy physically. Guess I’m resorting to ripping now if they won’t let me download the very movie I bought legally.

One more reason to buy the disc, rip the movie and thus have all the benefits of a digital version PLUS actual ownership of the movie (disc). All "trust the cloud" concepts are welcoming strangers to be injected between consumers and their stuff. Those strangers are usually for-profit motivated. Possess what you buy and there are no such middlemen. Trust the cloud and you are trusting strangers with motivations that are not necessarily the same as your own.

Yes, learning to rip your own copy from disc is not as easy as entering a code. But once you know how, it is not that hard... and then you get to decide other matters such as quality settings, etc.

With "lifetime lease" the lifetime is decided by however long studios wish for you to have access to the file. Possess it yourself and they have no say, nor any way to strip rights of use, etc. Trusting distant strangers to be caretakers of your media is like- say- trusting me to be caretaker of your money. If you want to trust the financial cloud, feel free to send me your money. I'll take great care of it.

FYI: Disney is not the only studio to remove digital codes. Universal and Warner stopped including digital codes about 6 months ago with all of their disc releases. Universal expired all Canadian digital codes on December 31, 2024 as well.

It is a shame the studios have screwed with the public when it has come to digital codes and on line purchases of streaming movies. So far, I have some movies that only how up on Fandango/Vudu, others on Amazone Prime and the least amount on Apple. They are all connected to MoviesAnywhere so that turns out to be a bust. I have bought discs with digital copies and when I got around to registering the digital copy it wouldn't take and after an email exchange I was told that it expired 3 weeks prior (about 4 days after my initial purchase).

I have bought a fair amount of discs and have archived them to my NAS. When it comes to purchases on line of streaming - I nearly always wait for sales and more so "bundles" on sale. I don't expect them to last for more than a couple of years and thus, don't want to pay the full price but only the sale price. I am guessing others too are not trusting streaming services as they might have once and what Disney is doing ... well a lot of things Disney is doing is a major turn off and overly controlling.

This is where MakeMKV, Handbrake and Plex become your best friends. Even if I have the digital codes for BluRays, I still rip them to Plex because of non-sense like this.

MakeMKV and and an old port of TsMuxer are my go-to for BD disc to NAS archive. Digital copy is just for on the run use.

to be honest, I always thought digital codes with discs weren't to be trusted and I'm not surprised they're being withdrawn. Just felt too good to be true, but offered by random companies like Ultraviolet and more like free bonuses rather than being properly factored into the price of the disc
