Display calibration

I picked up a 24" ACD for my MBP.

I have decided that I will bite the bullet and buy calibration equipment and software, but I have no idea what I need. I'd like to get nice stuff... Can anyone make recommendations or point me toward a good reference?

Here's a couple of companies that might get you started.

Datacolor, who makes the Spyder line.
X-rite, who makes the Eye One,... line.

X-Rite and DataColor are the main companies in this space. Pantone has some entry level products, but they also resell X-Rite products for their higher end offerings. I use this X-Rite product that I purchased as a part of their ezcolor bundle.

So do I need to purchase separate software or do they come with very useful tools?

They come with software. The bundle I purchased lets me create profiles for my printer and scanner as well. You can download profiles from the printer vendors, but those are usually limited to specific printer/paper combinations.
