The screen on my MBP running 10.5.1 continues to dim well before the screensaver ever is activated. The "automatically reduce screen brightness before sleep" option has not been selected. I have even made sure that the screensaver is triggered at 5 mins while the two sleep options are both set to trigger after an hour.

I found this article, copied below, on apple support; unfortunately, it is quite honestly close to useless. One thing interesting to note about the article is that it seems to imply the problem is isolated to 10.4, however this problem seems to equally applicable to 10.5. I have been experiencing this issue ever since I installed Leopard and, for unrelated reasons, have even done a full erase and install with a second brand new Leopard disk Apple Support sent out.

I am at loss with how I might resolve this so any additional ideas (aside from deal with it ;)) would be much appreciated.

Intel-based Macs: Built-in display dims before sleep
Last Modified on: December 06, 2007

Issue or symptom
The screen may dim before sleep on an Intel-based Mac's built-in display, even if the Energy Saver setting "Automatically reduce the brightness of the display before display sleep" is disabled. This setting may no longer be in effect after restarting the computer.

Products affected
Mac OS X 10.4.4 through 10.4.11
MacBook, MacBook Pro, or Intel-based Mac with built-in display

Solution
To temporarily stop the display from dimming before display sleep, enable the Energy Saver preferences setting "Automatically reduce the brightness of the display before display sleep," then disable it again.

You may also be able to temporarily avoid the issue by putting the computer to sleep and waking it.

Note: The issue will return each time the computer is restarted.
